PALM BEACH, Fla. — Top-10 finishes from Charlie Zielinski and Nate Vontz helped the Creighton men’s golf team to a runner-up finish at the Advance Golf Partners Collegiate on Tuesday, Feb. 15.
The tournament, featured 21 teams and 121 individuals on the Hammock Beach Ocean Course in Palm Beach, Fla.
The Bluejays were tied for first after 18 holes with Mercer and shared the 36-hole lead with host UNCG. The teams were still tied in the final holes before the Spartans emerged with a three-stroke victory. Creighton finished with an 873 total following loops of 284, 296 and 293, which was eight shots better than defending BIG EAST Tournament champion Connecticut and 32 strokes ahead of league rival Butler.
Zielinski paced CU with a 2-under 214 total after rounds of 69, 72 and 73 to claim fifth in the standings. In the process the sophomore extended his streak to 36 straight rounds in the 60s or 70s since enrolling at CU, including 12 rounds of par or better.
Vontz followed back-to-back 71s with a final round 74 to tie for eighth place. It was the senior’s 10th straight top-11 finish dating to last season, and the Lincoln product has now shot par or better in 7-of-15 rounds this season and 29 times overall in 106 career rounds as a Bluejay.
Sophomore Jackson Thompson tied for 14th place with a 2-over total of 218. He shot an even-par 72 before a second round 77. Jackson then closed the tournament with a collegiate-low 69 thanks to four birdies in his first 13 holes.
Cade McCallum tied for 50th place with circuits of 74, 76 and 78 for a 228 total. That was two shots and 10 places better than Shaun Campbell’s 230 (72-81-77) in his first stroke play tournament as a Bluejay.
Owen Mackin competed individually for CU and tied for 96th place after rounds of 75, 86 and 76.
George Mason’s J.P. Miller fired loops of 68, 71 and 69 for a 208 total to win the tournament by two shots over Western Carolina’s Preston Richardson on the par-72 course that measured 7,169 yards.
Creighton returns to the course on Feb. 20-22 when it plays in the Loyola Intercollegiate in Goodyear, Ariz.
