IRVING, Texas — After tallying thrilling wins over quality competition over the weekend, OSU senior Lisa Marie Rioux was named Big 12 Tennis Players of the Week.
Rioux helped the Cowgirls register a statement win over No. 10 USC on Feb. 19 and followed that with a sweep of Tulsa the next day. Rioux combined for a 3-0 record through the two matches, including a victory over the nation’s top-ranked singles player and the fifth-ranked doubles duo in the country.
The Okinawa, Japan native and her doubles partner, Ayumi Miyamoto, kicked off the weekend with a 6-2 victory over the fifth-ranked Trojan pair of Snow Han and Salma Ewing to give the Cowgirls the first half of the doubles point. The duo dropped the first game, but battled back to tie the match at two before rattling off four-straight points for the win.
Rioux then avenged Miyamoto’s loss in singles, which cut OSU’s lead in half at 2-1, by taking down the No.1-ranked Eryn Cayetano on court one. The senior won seven-straight games on her way to a 6-0, 6-3 upset victory.
Rioux carried the energy from Saturday’s win into Sunday, as she and Miyamoto secured a 6-3 victory against Tulsa’s Laia Conde Monfort and Shura Poppe. Rioux proceeded to lead 94th-ranked Conde Monfort 6-3, 4-3, when the match was halted.
