Sunday’s finale at the RBC Heritage won’t hold the prestige last weekend’s Masters finish held, but it will likely contain far more twists and turns than the last 18 at Augusta National. Harold Varner III — seeking his first PGA Tour win — leads by one over a trio that includes Shane Lowry, Erik van Rooyen and Patrick Cantlay with just one round to go at Harbour Town.
That foursome makes up the very top of the board, and Varner III is a tremendously compelling story given his success on the PGA Tour without a win to date. He won the Saudi International earlier this year in a very strong field, but a win here would certainly be stepping it up a level.
Just beyond the leaders is another intriguing story. Jordan Spieth, who missed an 18-inch putt to close out his round on Saturday, is just three back of the lead and two back of the trio that trails Varner III, and he hasn’t won in over a year since he took the Texas Open just before last year’s Masters. Whatever he does on Sunday, whether good, bad or insane, will be noteworthy, which will make Sunday’s festivities must-see throughout the day.
