Angels vs. Mariners suspension details: Phil Nevin among 12 banned by MLB for roles in brawl

    June 28, 2022No Comments

Major League Baseball has issued suspensions for those involved in the brawl between the Mariners and Angels on Sunday, and it’s a long list of those who will be sitting out some games.

The highlights of the list are Angels manager Phil Nevin (10 games), Mariners outfielder Jesse Winker (seven games), Angels third baseman Anthony Rendon (five games), Angels assistant pitching coach Dom Chiti (five games) and Mariners shortstop J.P. Crawford (five games).

Here’s a full rundown of each individual and their suspension:

    Individual Suspension
    Angels manager Phil Nevin 10
    Mariners outfielder Jesse Winker 7
Angels third baseman Anthony Rendon 5
Angels assistant pitching coach Dom Chiti 5
    Mariners shortstop J.P. Crawford 5
    Angels pitcher Andrew Wantz 3
    Angels pitchers Ryan Tepera 3
    Angels pitcher Raisel Iglesias 2
    Mariners outfielder Julio Rodriguez 2
Angels bench coach Ray Montgomery 2
Angels Major League interpreter Manny Del Campo 2
Angels catching coach Bill Haselman 1

MLB announced Nevin, Chiti, Del Campo and Wantz will begin serving their suspensions Monday night. Montgomery and Haselman will serve their suspensions when Chiti returns from his suspension. The players will begin serving their suspensions Monday or, should they appeal, they will wait until the process is complete.

Since Rendon is on the injured list, he will serve his suspension when he returns at the start of the 2023 season. However, MLB noted he is not allowed to sit on Los Angeles’ bench over the next seven games.

On Sunday, after both teams had been warned about retaliation, Wantz hit Winker with a pitch in the second inning. Winker took exception with the Angels bench after he was hit and Nevin came storming out of the dugout.

The exchange led to an all-out brawl that saw eight players and coaches ejected from the game.

The suspensions will hit both teams hard in different ways. For the Mariners, they are losing three regulars in their lineup for at least the next two games with Winker, Crawford and Rodriguez out. The Angels, on the other hand, did not have any active batters suspended.

Los Angeles, on the other hand, has a large number of its coaches sitting out, as its manager, three coaches and an interpreter are going to be out. It also has three relievers, including Wantz, who threw at Winker. Though Wantz started the game, he is a reliever and was just being used as an opener against Seattle.

All told, it is 33 total games of suspensions for the Angels and 14 for the Mainers.

The justification for the Nevin’s suspension was that Wantz threw at Winker while warnings were in place, while Winker received his seven games for his actions that began the fight. Rendon’s came for leaving the dugout while on the injured list and for his actions in the brawl.

Evidently, tossing sunflower seeds earned Iglesias his two-game suspension.
