Dana White Shoots Down Possibility of Mayweather-McGregor Rematch

    June 28, 2022No Comments

UFC President Dana White has shot down the possibility of a rematch between company superstar Conor McGregor and five division world champion Floyd Mayweather.

Back in 2017, Mayweather stopped McGregor in the tenth round of a sanctioned boxing match. Mayweather retired in the aftermath with a perfect record of 50-0.

Mayweather has continued to see ring action, with several exhibition fights already completed. He’s scheduled to take part in an exhibition in Japan in September.

Over the weekend, news broke that a rematch between Mayweather and McGregor was being negotiated. The details were not revealed if the fight would have been an exhibition or a sanctioned contest.

McGregor, who is under contract with the UFC, would require permission from the organization to take part in anything fight-related outside of the UFC’s scope.

White denied that his company is trying to make a second Mayweather-McGregor bout.

“Not me, I’m not talking about that,” White said stated on The Jim Rome Show. “[McGregor’s return] will be in the cage. Conor’s looking to come back the end of this year, early next year.”

McGregor has been out of the cage since July of 2021, when he suffered a severe leg injury during his trilogy fight with Dustin Poirier.

According to White, McGregor is pushing to get back in the cage by the early part of 2023.

“When I do talk to Conor, Conor wants to fight,” White said. “Conor gets all kinds of offers for movie roles and all these other things that he could go and do and make money. He doesn’t want to do any of that. Conor wants to fight.

“When he fights, he gets paid. Fighting is what he wants to do.”
