Canelo Is An “average Mexican Boxer That Has Been Promoted To The Top” Said Max Golovkin

    September 12, 2022No Comments

By Dan Ambrose: Gennadiy Golovkin’s brother Max Golovkin, says he and the team view Canelo Alvarez as just an “average boxer” from Mexico.

Max Golovkin says Canelo (57-2-2, 39 KOs) has gotten where he is today because of the way he’s been promoted.

Max’s label of the 32-year-old Canelo being just an “average boxer” would ring true if one looked at how lost he was against Dmitry Bivol, Erislandy Lara, Golovkin, and Floyd Mayweather Jr.

Canelo was outboxed by Golovkin in both of their fights, as well as against the above-mentioned fighters.

Interestingly, Canelo only has two losses in those five fights, which suggests that the judges were VERY generous when it came to scoring the contests to his benefit, all of which took place in Las Vegas.

“I think we trained in camp together a couple of times. It was a long time ago. He was a different fighter, and I was a different fighter. It was a different time,” said Gennadiy Golovkin to DAZN’s ‘The Making of the Trilogy‘ about his fight this Saturday night against Canelo Alvarez.

“I was the more experienced one. We were sparring with one another. I was the more experienced one. I remember the sparring sessions. At the time, he was a young fighter. He wasn’t who he is now,” said Golovkin about his early sparring session with a young Canelo.

“It felt like we were going to have a big fight,” Golovkin said about his first fight with Canelo in 2017. “It was my first time at the T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas.

“Basically, I felt confident. I was calm because I was sure of myself, and I was very committed to the fight. I felt very comfortable,” Golovkin said.

“He’d become more experienced. He’d gotten older and improved as a boxer, that was for sure.

“They didn’t want to fight Golovkin. They dragged it out. They got embarrassed into that fight, shamed into it in the end, and they dragged it out,” said Matthew Macklin about Team Canelo.

“They waited for Golovkin to get a little bit older, a little bit older, a little bit older. ”

“I personally consider Canelo to be just an average boxer. That’s how Gennadiy and our team see him,” said Golovkin’s brother Max Golovkin.

“He’s just some average Mexican boxer that has been promoted to the top. But we know who he is and what his team is.”
